One of the reasons for this lack of recognition of work addiction  is that workâ€"even excessive workâ€"is typically thought of as a positive trait rather than a problem. Overwork is rewarded, both financially and culturally, and may lead to the worker being seen in a more positive light in different ways. However, work addiction can be a very real problem and can interfere with functioning and relationships, in similar ways to other addictions. The original reason the term workaholic was coined was to demonstrate the parallel between work addiction and alcoholism, and this is probably more accurate than the common perception that someone who works excessively is a responsible and ethical person. Problems Associated With Work Addiction Although excessive work is often well regarded and even rewarded, there are problems associated with work addiction. As with other addictions, work addiction is driven by compulsion, rather than by a healthy sense of fulfillment that is common among people who simply put a lot of effort and dedication into their job, or people who are deeply committed to their work as a vocation. In fact, people who fall prey to work addiction may be quite unhappy and distressed about work, they may be overly concerned about work, they may feel out of control of their desire to work, and they may spend so much time, energy, and effort on work that it impairs non-work relationships and activities outside of work. Signs and Symptoms Despite the difficulties in precisely defining work addiction, several signs of workaholism have been identified. The  dire wolf  (Canis dirus) and the  saber-toothed tiger  (Smilodon fatalis) are two of the best-known megafauna mammals of the late  Pleistocene  epoch, prowling North America until the last Ice Age and the advent of modern humans.  Thousands of  their skeletons have been dredged from the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles, indicating that these predators lived in close proximity. Both were formidable, but which would triumph in  mortal combat? Dire Wolf The dire wolf  was a plus-size predecessor of the modern dog and a close relative of the grey wolf (Canis lupus), a carnivore that also scoured Pleistocene North America. (The word dire, meaning fearful or threatening, comes from the Greek word  dirus.) As the genus  Canis  goes, the dire wolf was pretty big. Some may have weighed up to 200 pounds, though 100 to 150 pounds was normal. This predator had powerful, bone-crushing jaws and teeth, used mostly for scavenging rather than hunting. The discovery of huge numbers of associated dire wolf fossils is evidence of pack behavior. Dire wolves had significantly smaller brains than grey wolves, which may explain how the latter helped drive it to extinction. Also, the dire wolfs legs were much shorter than those of modern wolves or large dogs, so it probably couldnt run much faster than a house cat. Finally, the dire wolfs predilection for scavenging rather than hunting would probably have put it at a disadvantage facing  a hungry saber-toothed tiger. Saber-Toothed Tiger Despite its popular name, the saber-toothed tiger was only distantly related to modern tigers, lions, and cheetahs.  The Smilodon fatalis  dominated North (and eventually South) America. The Greek name  Smilodon  roughly translates as saber tooth. Its  notable weapons were its long, curved teeth. However, it  didnt attack prey head-on with them; it lounged in low tree branches, pouncing suddenly and digging its enormous canines into its victim. Some paleontologists believe that the tiger also hunted in packs, though evidence is less compelling than for the dire wolf. As big cats go,  Smilodon fatalis  was relatively slow, stocky, and thick-limbed, the biggest adults weighing 300 to 400 pounds but not as nimble as a comparably sized lion or tiger. Also, as scary as its canines were, its  bite was relatively weak; chomping too hard on prey might have broken one or both saber teeth, effectively dooming it to slow starvation. The Fight In normal circumstances, full-grown saber-toothed tigers wouldnt have come near  comparably sized dire wolves. But if these predators converged on the tar pits, the saber-tooth would have been  at a disadvantage, because it couldnt pounce from a tree branch. The wolf was at a disadvantage because it would rather feast on dead herbivores than hungry carnivores. The two animals would have circled each other, the dire wolf swatting with its paws, the saber-toothed tiger lunging with its teeth. If  Smilodon fatalis  roamed in packs, they likely were small and loosely associated, whereas the dire wolfs  pack instincts would have been much more robust. Sensing that a pack member was in trouble, three or four other wolves would have rushed to the scene and swarmed the saber-toothed tiger, inflicting deep wounds with their massive jaws. The tiger would have  put up a good fight, but it would have been no match for a thousand pounds of canines. A crushing bite to  Smilodons neck would have ended the battle.

Any person that is not white in the United States will be considered a minority and discriminated against by most. In class we watched a YouTube video of ABC’s Primetime show What would you do? This is a hidden camera show that aims to test bystanders’ reactions in ethically challenged scenarios. One of the video segments that caught my attention was the Muslim girl in the bakery. As the man behind the counter continued to call her a terrorist, telling her to get out of his store, and said she was not American because of the way she dressed; sad part about this was the people who just sat and watched. At the end of the segment thirteen people stood up for her, six basically applauded and shook the ignorant counter guy’s hand agreeing, and twenty people did absolutely nothing. I understand that this was shot in one of the most racist states, Texas but why should Muslims walk around in fear because of their faith and practicing religion? Nahiya the Muslin woman that this experiment was based off stated that she fears to walk around alone because she has an incident where she was jumped by 5 girls for dressing the way she does. People need to realize a person’s outfit or skin color does not make up a person; it’s the inside beauty that distinguishes who a person is. â€Å"Colored people† is a known term around the United States and it’s sad. If you are not white you are colored, the person who persons who started this term is ignorant themselves because white is a color. The change in society from back in the day until now has changed for the better but racism still remains. If you are black you are a criminal, if you are Asian you cannot drive, if you are Hispanic or Latino you are an illegal alien, and so on. People are stereotyped by their ethnicities and it’s awful. In the book Rereading America there is a story â€Å"C. P. Ellis† by author Studs Terkel; he writes about a man that grew up as a former KKK member’s son. After his dad died he believed it was his duty to join the Klan in order to live out the name. After joining he realized they hate people just to hate them. He soon had his own experience speaking one on one with a black male, soon after he found himself speaking one on one with a Jewish male. These two conversations made him realize they are people just like him; we all have the same emotions and strive for goals to succeed in life the same way. He was torn between remaining a Klansman for his family beliefs and doing what is right for society which is accepting everyone for who they are. Slowly he became more involved in fighting racism especially at his child’s school but everyone slowly starting to figure it out. Every time the Klansmen found out about C. P. ’s actions they yelled at him for going against his own kind leaving C. P. to second guess what is truly right. C. P Ellis states, â€Å"My old friends would call me at night, â€Å"C. P. , what the hell is wrong with you? You’re selling out the white race! † This begins to make me have guilt feelins. Am I doin’ right? Am I doin’ wrong? Here I am all of a sudden makin’ an about-face and tryin’ to deal with my feelin’s, my heart, my mind was beginnin to open up. I was beginning to see what was right and what was wrong. I don’t want the kids to fight forever. (Terkel 398) If everyone could just realize what he realized the United States would become a better place. Racism and prejudice would be decreased if not eliminated and we would be in the right direction of world peace instead of a country filled of ignorance. Every American claims they want world peace, in order to achie ve this goal everyone as a whole needs to work together. Everyone wants to live the â€Å"American Dream,† the American dream in my eyes is a myth. The day everyone is treated equally like they are supposed to the American dream will exist. If you are the most intelligent person graduating at your college but happen to be a different race or as Dalton states in the story Horatio Alger â€Å"the best black student† but happen to land an interview with a company whose management is prejudice; what are the chances of the person of another race getting hired over the white girl or guy that interviews after them? I believe your success should be solely dependent on your intelligence, whatever you are worthy of achieving should be achieved. Success should not be interfered with the color of your skin, the religion you practice, or even the tattoos that are on your body. I recently watched a news special on a white male, he had on a sleeveless t-shirt in a picture which showed his arms that were full of tattoos; he was also bald and had in an eyebrow ring. His picture was shown to twenty people all of which judged him harshly solely on appearance. Some comments that were said were he was definitely a criminal, a low life, and probably had a job at some dollar store because that is all that would hire a guy like him. Little did the people know that guy in the picture was about to walk out and surprise them. Thomas the guy this experiment was based off of walked out in scrubs, you could not see his tattoos and his eyebrow ring was out. He explained that he was one of the most successful surgeons on the east coast and while they take the time to judge him off a picture, he is saving lives. It is not right to judge a book by its cover because what is inside is what you are truly interested in. This experiment opened the spectators’ eyes and they apologized, Thomas informed them stereotyping is not right and is what continues to put our country in such a slump when it comes to treated people equally. The little experiments TV shows or news stations conduct are smart and I truly think it opens people’s eyes. Some people choose to remain ignorant and that’s their choice. The fact that it is about to be 2013 and we have equal rights the only thing people should strive for is the American dream. It should not be based on race where only white Americans obtain it either. Example a truck moves an empty container to the shipper. The shipper loads the container with goods. The truck transports the loaded container to port. At the port, the container is loaded onto the steamship, which is forwarded to the port of destination. The container is driven to the warehouse of the receiver shortly after being ischarged at the port of destination Intermodal transportation as known today first gained currency in the 1960s when the use of trailer sized containers began transforming the way freight is packed and loaded on trucks and ships. Cargoes had of course been transferred through different type of modes long before the introduction of modern containers. Each of the transportation modes has gone through technological evolution and has functioned separately under a moda lly based regulatory structure for most of the 20th century. Other benefits of intermodal transportation are beyond the commercial interests of the involved companies. A properly organized system of intermodal transportation is environment friendly, conserves natural resources, reduces the social problems of trucking industry employees, and provides economy with services that allow its growth. Logistics and intermodal services play important roles in transportation. Logistics refers to a companys program for efficiently delivering goods to the customer. Intermodal pertains to the use of more than one type of transportation to ship the goods. It takes specialized skills, education and experience to work in the various logistics and intermodal transportation careers such as a shipping supervisor oversees the shipping department and its processes and procedures. A logistics systems coordinator oversees a staff of forklift drivers and organizes raw materials and goods to be shipped from one plant to another. A transportation analyst strives to improve business processes and reduce costs by analysing existing transportation and operations practices. A customer service associate in the logistics area works with customers to solve transportation-related problems. The advantage of intermodal freight transportation gives you flexibility with how you want to move your freight. Additionally, you have the opportunity to be creative in finding the most efficient way to move your freight. Generally, this process involves at least two modes of transportation. The more efficiently you plan, the more money you will save. Disadvantages are that Intermodal freight transportation may be costly depending on the number of modes of transportation. Some downfalls to intermodal freight transportation involve the high costs that are associated with moving freight by using several types of modes of transportation. Lack of communication and idle time of equipment will increase transportation costs. Similarly, equipment that moves from one location to another empty also adds to the costs. Containerization In 1995 Malcom P. McLean, a trucking entrepreneur from North Carolina, USA, was the man who came up with the idea of transporting an entire truck with their cargo still inside. He got the idea of moving the freight in a simpler and quicker way by lifting the container from a vehicle directly onto the ship without having the cargo unload. These ideas were vastly improved through â€Å"Intermodalism†. The freight could be moved with the same container with minimum interruption and different transport modes during its journey. Containers where easily moved from ships to trains and trucks which made it easier for those who were shipping cargos in bulk. This has also reduced the number of workers involved in handling and carriage. This idea simplified the logistic process and the idea led to a revolution in cargo transportation and international trade over the next 56 years. Containers are the generic carriers of goods which can be loaded onto any vehicle or type or transport, such as an ocean cargo ship or a trailer tractor and are the standard option when transporting goods or material over longer distances. Rail, Trucking and shipping (air and sea) transportation is now designed to be able to carry a variety of containers all over the world, and the containers themselves have been standardized in terms of capacity, material and size for ease of use and handling all over the world. This standardization of containers also helps customs officials inspect and clear goods for shipment. The standard sizes of containers 20 foot (6. 09 m), 40 foot (12. 18 m) , 45 foot (13. 7 m), 48 foot (14. 6 m), and 53 foot (16. 15 m). But the most important and common once is the 20-foot container, referred to as a Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit (TEU) became the industry standard reference so now cargo volume and vessel capacity are commonly measured in TEU. The 40-foot length container literally 2 TEU became known as the Forty-foot Equivalent Unit (FEU) and is the most frequently used container today . Special containers include open end, open side, open top, half-height, flat rack, refrigerated (known as reefer), liquid bulk (tank), and modular all built to same exterior lengths and widths as the standard dry cargo containers. Open tops are used for easy loading of cargo such as logs, machinery odd sized goods. Flat racks can be used for boats, vehicles, machinery or industrial equipment. Open sides may be used for vegetables such as onions and potatoes. Tank containers transport many types of liquids such as chemicals, wine and vegetable oil. Containerization has made so much of improvement such as freights can be manipulated anywhere in the world, discarded containers can be reused, low transport costs; 20 times less than bulk transport, port turnaround times reduced from 3 weeks to about 24 hours, simpler and less expensive packaging, stacking capacity on ships, trains (double stacking) and on the ground, can only be opened at the origin, at customs and at the destination and reduced spoilage and losses (theft).
